Liss Cricket Club 1st XI v Wherwell on Sat 17 May 2014 at 2.00pm
Liss Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report Liss started the new season with a hard fought win against Wherwell. Even with the sun blazing the track was slightly soft so Liss won the toss and chose to bowl. Cowell and Wren opened up the bowling. Cowell made a good start finding a great line and length and new boy Wren’s extra pace troubled the batsmen early on. Cowell struck first moving the ball off the seam and left Wherewell 1-1. The pair continued to bowl well and kept the run rate down but the batsmen steadied themselves. Wrenn made the next breakthrough with Beckingham being caught behind and the score was now 46-2. The new Wherwell pair immediately set about the bowling and started to form a good partnership. Pleace jnr replaced Cowell but boundaries came at both ends. Liss stepped up their fielding and were saving a lot of runs but at the halfway point the visitors had pushed onto 93-2 and were looking at a big total. Wrenn finished his tight 10 over spell with 1-24. Hedicker joined the attack and after a couple of loose overs really started to battle hard and with him and Pleace jnr started to lower the run rate. A partnership of 62 had formed before Pleace jnr struck at a good time bowling Nicel for 60 quickly followed by his 2nd wicket removing Trucker for 38. Talented batsmen continued to come to the crease and the score was still heading towards a big score. Pleace snr and Small were then brought in to slow the pace down. This tactic made a difference with both bowlers taking early wickets and left Wherewell 160-6 with 7 overs remaining. The visiting side tried to hit out against the slower pace but were only successful with a handful of boundaries and the pair picked up another 2 wickets each and Liss had bowled them out for 186. A fine effort and Small 3-23 and Pleace snr 3-17 were finished off well.
Kemp and Pleace jnr opened up and immediately noticed the step up in class. Kemp struck two early boundaries before one jagged through his defence and Liss were 8-1 in the first over. Wrenn joined captain Pleace and the two players looked to rotate the strike and keep up with the run rate. The task looked tough with the standard of bowling and the when Pleace was bowled by a jaffer in the 10th over liss were left on 41-2. It was time to knuckle down and Wrenn was batting very well. Cowell added just 4 and after Allcock was caught for 10 the home side were 64-4. A partnership was needed and it was Pearce joining Wrenn. Pearce’s experience was telling and Liss started to get the scoreboard moving. The step up in run rate put pressure on the visitors and it started to show. Going past the 100 Liss started to believe. They then lost Wrenn at a crucial time for a fantastic debut score of 57. It was over to Peacre now, liss started to loose wickets but Pearce kept a calm head and kept the runs coming. The 8th wicket fell with 11 runs still needed and young Evans joined the crease. Doing his job well held up the end and left it to an on fire Pearce to strike the winning blow in the 38th over. Pearce finished 78 not out and Liss had done really well to pick up their first victory in County 4.
