Liss Cricket Club Won by 39 runs

Match report Odiham & Greywell vs Liss I

Liss got their season off and running with a superb win against a strong Odiham side. Overnight rain had livened up the pitch and the home side put Liss into bat. It was a good start by the opening bowlers but Kemp and Pleace kept their heads and picked up runs when they could. As predicted the ball was nipping around but a flurry of boundaries from both players seemed to settle Liss as they moved along at 5 an over. A change in bowling brought Broom into the attack. His erratic style immediately caused problems. Extra bounce and movement first had Kemp caught for 19 followed by a mad few overs where 4 more Liss batsmen were removed all by Broom for just 7 runs. The visitors were 64-5 and were looking at another low total. Moore joined Pleace and tried to stop the collapse. With Moore able to keep his wicket Pleace started to pick up the pace again passing his 50, along with Liss passing the 100 mark. Unfortunately, after a 53-run partnership had formed Moore was caught for 18. Allcock was next in and with only 117 on the board Liss needed to use the remaining 18 overs to gather runs and give themselves a chance with the ball. Allcock set about his task immediately with quick boundaries. Both batsmen looked at ease and began to spread the field. Liss past the 150 mark and with the big shots still coming from Allcock he was approaching his 50 but fell 5 short being caught behind off the bowling of Hartnett. This 66-run partnership however had really set Liss up and gave Pleace the opportunity to let loose. With 9 overs left and Dillon-Thiselton keeping calm at the other end Pleace opened his shoulders. The ball going to all parts of the ground and he past his century with a maximum. The home side changed up the bowling to slow him down but the rate continued to increase. After taking the last 5 overs for 64 Liss had finished on a fabulous 269 with Pleace 142 not out and Dillon-Thiselton also not out for 17.

Odiham looked to make a positive start with the run chase and were moving at over 6 an over before Taylor attempted one too many big shots and was caught off the bowling of Moore. The wicket did not stop the aggressive batting with Munt looking to attack from the start. Liss were leaking runs and with some great strokes the high run rate continued. Blanks was bowling well on his return and dug deep. His persistence paid off dismissing Munt for 19. With a change in the bowling Liss took pace off the ball with the spin of Dillon-Thiselton. He managed to slow the rate down but with Shooling still there the home side were dangerous. Shooling and Hodgson were batting well and were mixing the big shots with ones and twos. Odiham were still on track at the halfway point on 128-2 so Liss needed to break the partnership that was forming. It was Dillon-Thiselton who made this breakthrough having Hodgson caught for 41. The home side needed to still take risks as they started to fall behind the rate, Liss had introduced Hedicker into the attack and he managed to pick up 2 wickets in 2 overs with the crucial dismissal of Schooling for an impressive 80. Odiham were now 174-5 still needing 96 runs from the final 9 overs. The game was heading for an exciting finish but every time Odiham looked to accelerate Liss managed to pick up another wicket Hedicker’s 3rd and 4th wicket came in quick succession and with over 50 runs required from the final 3 overs Liss were looking favourites. Matty Evans came on to bowl the penultimate over and struck twice in two deliveries. The youngster was not finished there with a direct hit in the last over ran out the home sides 10th wicket and Liss had claimed a 39 run victory.
