Liss Cricket Club 2nd XI v Froxfield II on Sat 13 May 2017 at 2pm
Liss Cricket Club Lost by 28 runs

Match report Liss won the toss for the second time in a row on what proved to be a rather disappointing day for the hosts. After winning the toss Liss elected to field in relatively overcast conditions which promised movement and difficult conditions for batting. Opening the bowling were the ever-reliable Lawrence Baker and Jack Evans. Bowling with ferocity and accuracy the Liss openers made an excellent start, with the Froxfield openers, Gander and Murray, being reduced to just the 8 runs off of the first four overs. Things looked even better when in the 4th over Baker had Murray caught and bowled for a score of just 1, this brought Jenkins to the crease and the Liss bowlers continued in similar fashion restricting Gander and Jenkins to a very sluggish scoring rate. After a further 4 overs, Evans produced an excellent delivery which had Gander bowled for 19 with the score at 24 for 2 from 8.3 overs. And it wasn’t long before Froxfield were reduced to 27-3 from 9.3 overs when again that great bowler Baker had Jenkins dismissed for a score of 4. With this wicket, it brought D.Guy to the crease who with Patabendi looked to increase the Froxfield scoring rate, unfortunately for Guy after putting on 12 with Patabendi he was bowled for 2 by Hedicker leaving the Froxfield score at 39-4. In at 6 came Wankala who like Guy looked to build a steady partnership with Patabendi and again before he could really get going he was caught well by Southam off Hedicker for 1. J.Higgins joined Patabendi at the crease and it was evident from his stoic defensive technique he was there to act as the anchor to the Froxfield innings and provide support to Patabendi who was looking to increase the run rate. After Baker’s ever reliable and precise 10-4-17-2; in his debut game for the club Craig Feargrieve came on to bowl his first ever spell and a particularly impressive spell it was as in his 4th over Feargrieve had the dogged Patabendi caught for a combative innings of 21 with the score at 41. 41 for 5 and now Hedicker rung another change in attempt to grab those last few Froxfield wickets with Southam coming on to bowl in place of Hedicker. After 3 overs of struggling to find his usually consistent and nagging line Southam was removed from the attack and also making his debut for the club young Angus Mitchell was introduced into the attack who from the off bowled a brilliant and brisk line and length that asked many questions of the Froxfield pair S. Guy and J.Higgins. At the other end, after bowling an excellent debut spell of 6-0-22-1 Feargrieve was replaced by the veteran Dave Chambers bowling his ever-deadly hand grenades. Chambers and Mitchell bowled quite marvellously together and in his 4th over Mitchell had the dangerous S.Guy caught comfortably by Southam for 20. Striding in next was the Froxfield skipper Deakin who from the off attempted to take the initiative to the Liss bowlers and after striking three 4s and a single from a number of Chambers overs, Chambers finally had his man with a well-flighted delivery that deceived Deakin and bowled him off his pads for 13, leaving the score at 116 for 8. Bhlom came in to join Higgins whose scored stood at 4, for the final over of the Froxfield innings. At 8 down Liss were hunting for those last 2 Froxfield wickets to attain full bowling points and the prospect did not seem far away at all when Mitchell had Bhlom caught behind by Townsend for a duck off of the first ball of the over to leave Froxfield at 119-9 with 5 deliveries of the innings remaining. Mitchell using all his guile and skill strived desperately for the last wicket but to no avail with Froxfield finishing their innings at a steady 119-9 from 42 overs. It could have been an even better prospect for Liss had the total extras not tallied at 33 which ultimately was to prove fatal.
Steve May and Southam opened in the Liss reply to 119 and in similar vein to the last game Southam went searching for boundaries in the opening few overs and with the score standing at 17 for none after 4 overs Liss’s chances of victory seemed bright. However, in the fifth over Southam was unfortunately bowled by Deakin by a delivery that kept low for a quick 14 runs, 17 for 1 after 5. This brought Chambers to the crease who with May steadily and excellently built the Liss innings creating a strong foundation that made the prospect of victory for Liss seem very likely. Nudging the ball carefully around the ground May and Chambers guided the Liss score to a steady 42 for 1 from 20 overs. But it was in the 20th over that the partnership was broken by Gander who had May bowled for a steady innings of 10. In at 4 strolled Townsend who again batted well with Chambers to guide the Liss score to 63, the prospect of victory still looking very likely. It was the wicket of Townsend for 5, caught off Gander, that then brought a stutter to the Liss innings. Ian Chard the joined Chambers at the crease and in the following over Chambers was bowled by the impressive Wanakala for 25 with the Liss score still at 63. 63 for 4 now and Hedicker joined Chard at the crease and was only able to survive 2 balls before he was caught behind off Wanakala by Guy for 0. With the score at 63 for 5, Jonnie Evans joined Chard at the crease to attempt to see out the over that had claimed the wickets of both Hedicker and Chambers, Evans successfully kept out the 5th delivery but was then bowled for 0 from the last delivery of the over by the dominant Wanakala. With the score now standing at 63 for 6 after that devastating Wanakala over it was not pretty reading for Liss but when Baker joined Chard at the crease circumstances looked to be improving for Liss with Baker finding the boundary twice and Chard finding it once, after the pair had put on 16 together Chard was then bowled by Guy for 6, with the score standing at 79-7. Still only 40 runs behind with an ample number of overs remaining Liss still had a chance of winning the game when Jack Evans strode confidently to the crease to join Baker, turning the strike over nicely the pair put on 7 together and edged Liss ever closer to 100 but the partnership was suddenly broken when Baker, looking to put the pressure back on the Froxfield bowlers, was bowled for a battling 15. In his debut innings for the club Angus Mitchell joined Evans at the crease and when he wonderfully flicked away a square 4 the sun still appeared to be shining his radiance on the Liss batsmen in a last-ditch effort to will them to victory. With the overs now approaching 40 and the score standing at 89, Mitchell and Evans looked for quick singles and it was during one of these attempts that Mitchell was run out for 4. Feargrieve joined Evans with only a couple of overs remaining and after Feargrieve snatching a single, the next ball Evans was run out for 2 with Liss all out for 91, losing the match by 28 runs.
