Locks Heath v Liss Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 24 May 2008 at 1.30pm
Liss Cricket Club Won By 44 Runs

Match report A match winning knock of 71 from middle order batsman Harry Munt and a good all round bowling performance accounted for strong opponents Locks Heath this weekend and ensured that the 1st XI remain unbeaten and lie third in County Division 1.

Despite losing the toss, the skipper seemed happy enough that we were asked to have a bat on a hard deck and quick outfield. The usual pair of Martin and Pleace Jnr opened up and took full advantage of the decent batting conditions. Pleace especially timed the ball very well and boundaries came thick and fast. The score moved on to past 50 in the 10th over until chris snicked off going for a drive on 17. This brought Tarun to the crease on the back of last weeks 91. Pleace was however the next to fall guiding one to gully for a brisk and nicely played 46. Jamie Hall was next in for his first league innings this year and the pair both hit a couple of crunching drives and looked as though they could take the game away from Locks Heath. But just as Ramesh looked set for another big score he was well caught for 19. This wicket sparked a mini collapse as Hall was bowled for a good looking 30 and Cover, James and Lee fell cheaply, James however unlucky with some suspect Harry Munt calling. This left us 146-7 and looking in big trouble. Up step the unlikely lower order hero Bozo. Bozo took a no nonsense approach to any poor bowling and ran Harry ragged at the other end, meanwhile Harry was working the 1s and 2s very nicely and with the odd boundary moved past 50. After a key partnership of over 80 Bozo eventually fell for an excellent 26 and really helped pull the game back for us. Munt continued with a couple of lusty blows and fell for a chanceless 71. Pleace Snr and Janczur ran a 2 very well and the innings closed on 236-9. A good effort, however the top order will hope for better next week as this could easily have been a 270+ track with our batting line up.

The eagerly anticipated bowling partnership of Baul and Janczur took the new rock and they certainly did not dissapoint. Janczur in only his first over found a good area and with some mandatory lift had their opener caught at gully. Baul then got in on the act and accounted for the other opener by disrupting yet another middle stump. A. Richardson batting at 3 looked a threat and was especially strong on the drive. He then however got down to Janczur's end and struggled with his extra bounce. Janczur then nipped one away from number 4 which took his off stump and tested Richardson with a short ball which he mistimed to Lee and Locks Heath were reeling at 64-4. The Locks Heath skipper and number 6 then had to rebuild and despite Janczur beating the bat on numerous occaisions the pair survived and were effective in punishing any width. Janczur however finished an excellent 12 over spell and was unlucky to finish with 3 for 32. The partnership however threatened to take the game away from us until Baul was reintroduced and removed number 6 by nipping one back and trapping him lbw on the back foot. Ramesh was bowling very tidy off spin at the other end and all of a sudden the runs dried up and pressure told as wickets began to fall. Baul picked up his third when a ball was drilled to Pleace Snr at mid on and Tarun took 3 wickets with the key wicket of their skipper for 76 caught behind after a very good knock, an excellent caught and bowled and bowling the last man. A run out completed the 10 wickets. Baul finishing his 12 overs with 3-51 and Ramesh bowling a great 10 over spell under pressure with 3-39. Locks Heath ended up 192 all out.

A win which was very well ground out by the boys proved the strength in depth the side has. Despite the batting innings looking bit short on that track and outfield it in the end turned into a comfortable looking win. The 1st XI travel to Andover next week and will look to build on this success and push to play in the SPL in 2009.
