Liss Cricket Club 1st XI v Bedhampton on Sat 21 Jun 2008 at 1.30pm
Liss Cricket Club Won by 59 runs

Match report Liss 1st XI hosted rivals Bedhampton on a dreary Saturday knowing that a win may well see them take first place in the whole of the Hampshire leagues. Batting first on a track which was covered overnight, the Liss batsmen felt that a 200+ score was within reach despite the overcast conditions. Pleace and Martin took on the new ball and the innings got off to a terrible start with Martin knicking to first slip for a golden duck. Max Garth joined Pleace for his last game before leaving for the USA and the pair set about the Bedhampton with some trademark big hits. The pair took the score to 48 before Pleace picked out an isolated fielder on the leg side to be caught for 34. This brought Cover to the crease and the scoring rate was continuing at a nice rate before Garth holed out to be luckily caught on the boundary for an unusually lacklustre 22. Munt on the back of some fine form was then bowled for a dissapointing duck and Sherbourne came to the crease with Liss desperately needing some solidarity in order to post a sizable total. At drinks the score was taken to over 100 with 4 wickets down, both Sherbourne and Cover looking comfortable and punishing the bad ball. Unfortunately as so often happens, drinks brought wickets and a good piece of fielding led to Cover being run out from a direct hit for 29. Lee and Johns fell barely troubling the scorers and Liss teetered on a very shakey 116-7. Janczur then came to the crease and despite Sherbourne being caught for a well timed 33 opened up his big shoulders to hit some towering sixes. This helped to post a below par but respectable 167. Janczur was the last man out for 32. The Liss batsmen will take some positives but also need to realise that wickets in hand and partnerships in the top order is what builds big totals.

With some fine rain coming in just before tea, the Liss opening bowlers realised that the pitch would assist them when it came to be there turn to bowl and the consensus in the Liss dressing room was that 167 would be enough with their bowling attack. Liss took to the field and the opening attack of Baul and Janczur bowled with good pace and high accuracy which was easily good enough to undo the Bedhampton top order. Baul disrupted skipper Clark's stumps for 9 and was then too quick for Chilton as he snicked behind for a duck. Janczur then got in on the act by bowling opener Wake who could barely lay bat on his bouncey spell for 6. This left Bedhampton in dissaray at 25-3. Liss knew that the next wicket was key as dangermen Hovey and Fenn looked to rebuild. Despite a frustrating period for Liss with some very close caught behinds and lbw shouts, a wicket never looked far away with both batsmen struggling to handle the pace of the opening pair. This proved to be too much for them and the pressure finally told as Janczur got a deserved second breakthrough by trapping Hovey lbw for an unusually subdued 16. This brought and end to a fantastic bowling comeback for Janczur, putting any injury fears to rest by bowling 12 straight overs which brought 2 important wickets for a modest 26 runs. Change bowlers Cover and Baker managed to pick up 1 and 2 wickets respectively which allowed the nippy Baul to come back and disrupt the tailenders stumps. All bowlers will be content, but the opening pair of Baul and Janczur continues to fill the club with optimism, Baul bringing up his 20th league wicket of the season with excellent figures of 10.3-3-23-4.

An excellent bowling and fielding performance won the game and as expected allowed Liss to take a clear lead at the top of County 1. More of the same will hopefully sink Fawley on Saturday as Liss welcome back top order batsman Jamie Hall. Liss will however miss Garth and look forward to his return in 2009. There is welcome transfer news for Liss also with the recruitment of former Petersfield and Liphook spinner Owen Murphy. Murphy will bring more healthy competition to the first team and will look to pick up more victims in the Hampshire league.
