Liss Cricket Club 1st XI v Porchester on Sat 05 Jul 2008 at 1.30pm
Liss Cricket Club Won by 34 runs

Match report 1st XI stamp authority on league with average performance.
Players arived at the glebe on staurday in confident mood after a series of wins and a stong team for their encounter with ex county 3 rivals Portchester. The plan was to win the toss and bat with a view to making in the region of 300, fortunately the coin landed in Liss' favour and Rick elected to bat. Rick and Henry Crofton, making his first appearance for the season, opened the batting and Rick put every lose ball to the boundary and Henry after surviving a drop on 0 looked as solid as usual. with the score on 34, Rick was struck on the pads and the umpire raised his finger despite a less than convincing appeal. Jamie, after showing up late went in to bat at 3, some recent form with his stroke play meant he was only going to play his shots which should have been revised by him after playing and missing at his first 3 balls. Henry started smashing boundaries with 2 convincing 6's, 1 hooked over square leg and 1 crunched straight over the 1st change leg spinners head. Jamie fell cheaply in single figures, then Henry fell too after scoring 32 gloving to short gully off their overseas leg-spinner. Giles and Harry had a job to re-build the innings and allow a late innings flourish with wickets in hand but unfortunatly D O'Neill job the ball to jag back enough to get another LBW, this time Giles being given despite the ball pitching and hitting well outside the line but the umpire judged it to be good enough with no shot played. Dain then played his usual innings including a few shots and singles, with the Portchester fielders getting frustrated Liss looked to be back on top again but Dain drove in the air to extra cover and was caught. Chris strutched out to the crease in confident form on the back of his first ton last sunday, this time batting at 7. Harry and Chris again started a partnership that Liss much need, keeping the scoreboard ticking along, but with a view to accelerate harry skyed a drive and was caught somewhat acrabatically. Portchester felt they had got through the batting but Liss fortunate this week that every 11 players were capable of scoring vital runs. it was the same story with Chris and JJ, bounderies were struck and singles taken but the partnership was broken by a catch from Chris's on-drive. Again when Chaz and JJ got going, JJ was caught and bowled which bought Owen to the crease making his debut at 10 so he had plently to prove, which he did until Chaz ran him out when runs were coming easy with Chaz striking 2 monster 6's. Bozo then joined Chaz in the middle with 20 needed to reach 200, with the score on 187 Bozo smashed a straight 6, and much to Chaz's dis-belief he did the same again next ball, with the order from Chaz to Bozo being take a single for a batting point on 199, Bozo went for glory but this time caught at long off. Liss were all out for 199, which was thought to be good enough with their bowling but well below par for a batting line up of Liss' quality.

The formiable new ball partnership of Chaz and Bozo got everyone excited in the field, things went as usual as with only Chaz's 3rd ball he bowled the oppositions captain for 0. runs were few and far between with the 2 bowling tight lines but Bozo particularly missing a yard of pace this week probably due to his 2 hour beasting in the gym the day before which he should learn from and not do again the day before a game. the Number 3 batsman then fell LBW to Bozo making it 30-2 of 11 overs, a few lose balls and lucky edges accelerated the score along before Chaz removed the dangerous Hungerford caught at mid wicket. This baught Kelly to the crease and depite surviving an early run out when Harry missed the stumps from about 5 metres he was trapped LBW by Chaz. Portchester then rode their luck and scored at about 3 an over to reach 80-4, with both teams desperate to win, the competitive Chaz used his frustration to tell their opening batsman just how good he thought he was. the introduction of Giles saw their openers stumps shattered and at 105-5 off 30 the game could go either way. Chaz finished his 12 overs with respectable figures which allowed Owen to open his Liss account with the ball on a dream spinners wicket. Owen bowled excellently taking 2-3 off 3 overs and leaving the game Liss' to lose. but when a team has the winning mentallity of Liss, the game was always theirs. Rick brought himself on due to some runs being leaked off Giles bowling and he bowled perfect line and length as the runs column completely dried up and taking a caught and bowled. Portchester added about 20 frustrating runs before Bozo came back for his 2nd spell and bowled their number 11's leg stump to see Liss make it 8 wins from 9 games.

All in all Liss proved how much class they have by playing within themselves but still running out clear winners. Next week the batsmen should look to bat more responsibly despite having a long batting line up, they still must graft for runs to ensure their dream of playing southern electric premier league cricket at the Glebe.
