Liss Cricket Club 1st XI v Ryde on Sat 16 May 2009 at 1pm
Liss Cricket Club Won By 7 wickets chasing revised total

Match report Liss approached the game with Ryde on Saturday high on confidence after a close fought battle with Eastleigh on the opening weekend. Weather conditions throughout the week meant it was always going to be a seamer friendly wicket. Luckily Pleace Jnr won the toss for a second consecutive week and with no hesitation inserted the opposition.

Baul opened the bowling instantly causing Ryde's operners trouble finding the edge twice in the first over. Janczur also was able to complete one over before heavy rain brought an abrupt halt too proceedings. With Ryde's opening pair seemingly not keen to get back on, Liss had to play the waiting game and thankfully conditions improved and the sun came out meaning only seven overs were lost. Liss came back to the field on the top of their game with Janczur finding his rhythm early after his below par performance the previous weekend. He got the breakthrough as Sammons tamely chipped up to Lee at midwicket. As Janczur was into his stride at one end Baul was somewhat unusually struggling with his consistency at the other allowing Drysdale to capitalise on some over pitched deliveries. Janczur continued to probe having Oatley caught in the slips before bowling the dangerous looking Drysdale through the gate for 26. Bishop was next to fall to Janczur after being caught by Martin down the legside. Captain Tolfrey was next to the crease and was dropped on 0 off Janczur which proved to be costly. Janczur finished off his spell with his fifth wicket having Day caught for 0 ending with figures of 5-29 from his 10 overs. Change bowlers Cover and Munt went about pushing through the advantage with Ryde on the ropes. Cover was bowling with great control and finding some gentle late swing to deceive the batsman on numerous occasions. Unfortunately Munt could not repeat his fine efforts from last week with anything slightly off target being dispatched by the aggressive Tolfrey. Cover continued with his steady deliveries and was reward with good figures of 2-29 from his 10 overs. Murphy came in to the attack late and finished things off with 1-5 from his four overs. Captain Tolfrey finished on 70 not out. Liss came from the field thoroughly please with there performance removing Ryde for 134.

In bowler friendly conditions everyone applied themselves well and fielding was generally of a high standard. Another positive to take was to different wicket takers from last week meaning everyone has now contributed in the attack this year.

Liss then chased a reduced total of 124 from 43 overs. They opened with Hall and Martin still expecting the ball to be nipping around in what was still difficult batting conditions. The moving ball seemed to be proving difficult for both Martin and Hall to time early on as Ryde ran in hard. However the batsmen soon sped things up with a few boundaries. It was then Hall who fell to a length ball from Day which he edged behind. Pleace Jnr then came to the wicket and he and Martin went about steadying the ship and seeing off the new ball. Both were on the whole untroubled and batted well in fending off the best Ryde had to offer. With some text book strokes and a couple of somewhat unorthodox shots Martin moved onto 34 before being beaten by a ball that nipped back. Pleace Jnr who looked in good touch was somewhat unfortunate to pick out mid off with a crisply struck drive. This then brought the formidable middle order pairing of Munt and Cover together with 40 still required. Cover looked fluent again and was quick to punish the oppositions wayward bowling quickly moving into the twenty's. Munt provided able support from the other end and finished with 10 not out while Cover who faced most of the strike finished things off unbeaten on 32.

This was a highly impressive all round performance from Liss who go into there next game against Bedhampton with sky high confidence and with the possible extra boost of two extra players in Garth and Crofton.
