Match report 1st XI Stay Unbeatan After Tough South Wilts Challenge

Liss approached the fourth game in good spirits after there unbeaten start to the season. There opposition South Wilts also went into the game unbeaten and the two sides produced a great match. South Wilts won the toss and chose to field on looked to be a seamer friendly wicket. Liss opened with Pleace Jnr and Martin and they got off to a promising start facing a strong opening attack. Pleace Jnr was first to fall leaving a delivery which cut back and removed his off stump. This brought Hall to the crease, he appeared to be struggling with his timing early on and was eager to try and take on South Wilts change bowler Cowley. However Cowley with his slow nagging accuracy managed to get the better of Hall who succumb to temptation and holed out at long off for 18. This brought James to the crease to join Martin. But James fell quickly in a similar manner to Hall holing out at long off from Cowley. Cover then came in and fared no better getting a leading edge off Cowley second ball falling for 0. Lee then came in and soon followed suit and fell cheaply for 5. This was a terrible spell for Liss which was brought about by poor shot selection and batsmen yet again not valuing there wicket highly enough. Amidst all the falling wickets Martin was holding the innings together with a excellent patient innings. Despite Matins great knock Liss were still reeling on 113-6 with there innings in the balance. It was then Baul who walked to the crease receiving a promotion to try and take apart the slow bowling. He did this in some style attacking from the first ball of his innings. Unfortunately Martin threw his wicket away on 44 after putting all the hard work in. Fortunately for Liss Baul was in tremendous form and continued to dispatch South Wilts attack to all parts of the ground with some audacious hitting. Baul was ably supported by Munt who was batting low down the order due to a dislocated finger which occurred the previous Monday at a six a side. Baul eventually fell for a brilliant 75 from 50 balls. Munt finished on 33 as Liss fell just short off 225 finishing on 223 all out. Liss took to the field in high spirits after Baul's innings saving knock. Baul and Janczur started well from either end with Baul bowling miserly and Janczur bowling a probing line and length causing the batsmen problems. Janczur got the breakthrough early with Pleace Jnr taking a sharp catch at second slip. Janczur then had Williams caught behind for 2. Janczur continued his fine spell by bowling Pittman for 6 and finishing with figures of 3 for 22 from his 10 overs. Baul bowled a tight opening spell of 0-14 from his 7 overs. Cover then came on and started where the openers finished bowling tight finding some swing which was causing problems for South Wilts batsmen. Murphy started well finding some turn and bounce and picking up an early wicket to leave South Wilts struggling. Cover finished his fine spell with figures of 2-25 off 10 overs. With South Wilts chances of a win appearing to have gone Hall and Pleace Snr came on to wrap up proceedings picking up 3 wickets between them. Another good win for Liss but there are some major improvements that need to be made if their unbeaten run is going to be maintained. Batsmen need to apply themselves better and fielders need to stay alert for the full 50 overs. Liss take there unbeaten record to Hursley Park next week.
