Liss Cricket Club Won By 52 runs

Match report 1st XI Remain Unbeaten After Unconvincing Performance Against Portsmouth

Liss faced second bottom Portsmouth on Saturday at the Glebe in a contest that did not go as well as Liss would have liked. Liss won the toss and elected to bat against a bowling attack that had conceded 300+ two weeks running. Liss got off to a quick start thanks to some wayward bowling from Portsmouth. This was short lived however after Pleace Jnr being bowled by a swinging delivery from Bailey. Hall then came to the crease and was out second ball playing on to a wide delivery. Then Izzy from the other end found some rhythm and had Martin caught at mid off for 10 before removing Cover three balls later for 0 with a good delivery. This left Liss reeling on 30-4 losing 4 wickets for just 4 runs. Munt and James were then brought together at the crease and went about rebuilding. Munt was holding his end well while James scratched around from the bowling of Izzy. James then fell to a thin edge behind leaving Liss on 49-5. Garth then came in and batted well on his first appearance of the season. He batted sensibly punishing any width or misplaced length that the bowlers offered. Garth then fell for a good 22. Baul then came and left quickly with a reckless shot off the spinner for 0. This left Liss on 81-7 and in trouble. Murphy came in with positive intent and took the attack to Portsmouth's bowlers. With Murhpy and Munt batting well together the score was moving along at a reasonable rate until Munt was bowled in the last over of Izzy's spell bringing to the end of a patient innings. Murhpy then upped the tempo bringing up his 50 but unfortunately Liss lost two quick wickets leaving Liss on 171 all out. This was a very disappointing batting performance from the team and yet another game gone by where the top six has not stood up to be counted. Liss took the field knowing they had to be at there best to defend a well below par total. Baul and Janczur opened up and offered little for the Portsmouth batsmen to play with. Baul was once again at his potent best soon removing both of the opening batsmen. Number 3 and 4 then came together and rebuilt with the aggressive number 4 driving firmly at any thing pitched up to the stumps. He was scoring quickly and gave a chance which was put down at mid off which looked to be crucial but fortunately for Liss Baul removed his leg stump next over to put Liss in pole position. Baul and Janczur then picked up a wicket apiece to leave Portsmouth in trouble on 58-5. Baul finished with excellent figures of 4-30 from 10. This brought Cover and Murphy into the attack and both bowled well to stifle the Portsmouth batsmen. With Portsmouth's lower order not offering much the wickets came quickly and Cover picked up 2-29 from 10 in a good spell while Murphy picked up the 3 remaining wickets to cap a fine all round performance. Liss will be happy with another victory and to maintain there unbeaten record but will want to dramatically improve there batting display's from the three previous weeks. Liss host Locks Heath who sit one place below in the league in what could prove a pivotal game to title aspirations.
